Firuz Shah Bahmani

Firuz Shah Bahmani
(?-1422)
He ascended the throne at Gul-barga in 1397 after two successors of Ghiyas al-Din Muhammad Bahmani (1377-1397) were deposed, one after the other, in the same year. Firuz Shah proved to be one of the ablest rulers of the Bahmani dynasty. Resuming war against Vijayanagar, Firuz forced the raya to give his daughter in marriage to him and to also surrender Banka-pur and other western districts as dowry. The war with Vijayanagar was renewed in 1419-1420 when Firuz tried to occupy the fort of Pangal. In this second war, the Bahmanis were defeated in battle and Firuz had to retire to his capital greatly humiliated, which affected his health adversely. He died in 1422, a totally broken man. Firuz Shah Bahmani contributed significantly to adorning his capital Gulbarga with magnificent buildings. He also constructed a fortified palace at Firuzabad on the bank of the Bhima River.
